Although the majority of people with schizophrenia present with prominent social functioning impairments, few studies have focused on social cognitive impairment in this clinical population. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that schizophrenia would be associated with pronounced deficits in recognizing socially relevant facial expression. We also assessed patterns of semantic memory organization, as reflected in the term associates generated to pictures of known persons. A discriminant analysis revealed that schizophrenia patients made a significantly larger proportion of semantic errors to pictures and associates than to nouns and their associates. This relative deficit was not attributable to impaired recall or recognition memory for the concepts or to general abilities to comprehend verbal information. Specifically, there was no impairment in patients’ ability to recall the word associates, nor was there an association between semantic memory organization in patients and their performance on the word associates test. These findings suggest that semantic memory organization, as assessed by the term associates task, is preserved in schizophrenia patients. The social cognitive impairment found in this study is consistent with other deficits shown by these patients in processing social stimuli.
