The Hate Story franchise, consisting of three films and a television series, has dealt with the issues of revenge, love and especially alienation and betrayal. The 2003 film Hate Story was selected as one of India's 100 greatest films by Film Companion in 2005. The 2010 film Hate Story 2, was the most successful Hindi film of 2010, earning over US$16 million in India. The franchise was extended in 2015 with Hate Story 3, which premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. The franchise was renewed in 2018 with Hate Story 4, which released in India on 4 December 2018.

Plot

Actor-turned-director Dibakar Banerjee wrote and directed the film. The film is named after a character of his own book ‘Ishq Mein Main Aur Patthar’. The films mainly revolve around the concept of revenge and deal with the theme of betrayal and alienation, which mainly focuses on the plight of unharnessed male power. Other social ills such as the rising crime rate and terrorism enter the storyline. Film critic and critic of music Mahesh Sharma wrote that Banerjee ‘proves, again, his extraordinary ability to paint a sense of India in monochrome in Hate Story 3.’ The film revolves around three unlikely friends, Siddharth, Sandeep, and Raghav, as they go about their daily lives in a multifaceted display of frustration. They become victims of a random terrorist incident, which kills their parents. The film also deals with the issue of single-parent families, with Sandeep’s mother being a single mother.

According to data compiled by Box Office India, the film earned 7.78 crore in its first week and averaged at 7.67 crore from Thursday to Sunday. The film had a good opening on its opening day, earning 14.3 lakh gross and an average of 14.5 lakh on its opening weekend. On its second weekend, the film earned 1.63 crore gross on its opening day. The film earned 4.23 crore in its first week.
